Heartache, pain, and hope of seeing them alive... Mothers in Gaza anxiously await news of their missing sons.
Thousands of Palestinian families in the Gaza Strip have not tasted joy despite the ceasefire announcement. Their loved ones, missing since the start of the Israeli war, remain unknown. Adding to their anxieties is the fact that the scale of the destruction and the limited resources hinder search and rescue efforts, if indeed they are still alive.
A report broadcast by Al Jazeera highlighted the plight of the missing in the Gaza Strip, particularly the tragedy of families clinging to the hope of learning the fate of their loved ones, even if they were killed or captured by the Israeli occupation.
Despite the end of the war, the anguish of Umm Ihab al-Najjar, displaced from the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza to Deir al-Balah in the central Gaza Strip, has not subsided. The fate of her 19-year-old son, Ihab, remains unknown since he disappeared a year ago in the Sudaniya area of northern Gaza while trying to obtain aid.
"I haven't heard anything about my son for a year," she says. "Is he alive? Was he killed? Or was he eaten by dogs?" She recounted that whenever bodies are brought to the hospital, she goes to the morgue to check if her son is among them.
